Amethyst - Birthstone & Original Valentines Gem
A gem prized for centuries - amethyst is the birthstone for February and the gem for the 6th & 17th wedding anniversaries. The stone is included in royal collections all over the world, from ancient Egypt to the British crown jewels and was once considered to be as valuable as rubies.
Amethyst derives from the ancient Greek word 'amethystos', meaning sober. It was said that an amethyst could prevent the bearer from becoming excessively drunk and also instills a sober and serious mind.
Did you know that amethyst was also said to have been favoured by St. Valentine, patron saint of love and marriage? - The patron himself is believed to have worn an amethyst ring carved with the image of Cupid.
